Driftwood & Linen Brooch

Jewellery from Natural Materials Workshop at Illawarra Festival of Wood, Bulli Showground

11 November 2023 10am - 1pm

Join me for a morning transforming collected natural materials into beautiful wearables

This workshop engages with treasures collected from the natural environment, you will learn a range of simple stringing, binding and cordage techniques which are then applied to your found natural materials to create beautiful wearable objects for the body or the wall.  Along with materials from nature, we will use a variety of other materials including brightly coloured embroidery threads, string, wool and raffia. You are welcome to bring your own materials from nature, such as twigs, driftwood and sturdy leaves, or use the materials provided.

You will be introduced to the processes of hand-making cordage (or string) using a hand-twisting technique and binding using a simple whipping technique. Both are deceptively simple processes with infinite possibilities! Cordage and whipping can be used in combination with found natural materials to make a piece of jewellery such as a necklace, bracelet, earrings or brooch.

Participants will leave the workshop with one or more wearable keepsakes.

Jewellery Workshop at Sturt Craft Centre, Mittagong 3 - 7 January 2024

This course introduces a range of versatile jewellery techniques to showcase your artwork. Designed for craftspeople and makers interested in learning jewellery techniques that will enable you to take your work from the table, wall or shelf to the body.

The course will cover a range of low-tech handmade jewellery solutions to suit makers who work with wood, ceramics, textiles, paper, glass, mosaic and found objects. The course will cover jewellery basics – saw piercing, cold joining, findings (earring hooks, brooch pins & jump rings), texturing and basic metal patination (colouring), with the opportunity to design and make customised solutions for your individual work.

Work with metals and wire in combination with the items that you bring to the course to create a small collection of jewellery. Suited to beginner and intermediate jewellers, the aim is for you to leave with new skills to expand your practice into wearables.
